On November 11, Da Nang’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Sakai City Environment Bureau (Japan) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a carbon-neutral city cooperation project.

Under this MoU, based on the Intercity Cooperation Project for Realizing a Low-Carbon Society by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, both parties agreed to enhance and promote environmental cooperation to build a carbon-neutral city and explore the potential of joint credit mechanism (JCM) projects, a bilateral credit mechanism.

Da Nang’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Sakai City Environment Bureau will strive to build a mutually beneficial relationship in environmental protection, aiming toward a carbon-neutral city and developing JCM projects in alignment with international treaties to which both countries are parties.

Throughout the cooperation agreement, both sides will actively seek coordination and involvement from relevant sectors and partners to ensure that cooperation is comprehensive, meeting the requirements of Japan’s Ministry of the Environment’s Intercity Cooperation Project for a Low-Carbon Society.

In early 2024, the Sakai City Japan-Viet Nam Friendship Association proposed cooperation with Da Nang City to develop a carbon-neutral port (CNP) in Da Nang.

The project aims to support energy-saving and renewable energy sectors within the port area, employing advanced technical equipment and integrating clean energy sources and ammonia fuel to reduce carbon emissions in logistics areas at Tien Sa Port and Lien Chieu Port, contributing to Da Nang’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Da Nang City is focused on building and developing circular economy models, green and low-carbon economies, and strives to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030.
