Viet Nam takes part in COP16 on biological diversity

On October 20, the 16th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) officially opened in Cali, Colombia. The event was attended by 23,000 delegates from various countries worldwide to develop a mechanism to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

The delegation of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Viet Nam, led by the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Agency (NBCA), with the participation of relevant units, joined the conference.

As a member of the CBD, Viet Nam has shown its responsibility to the international community in conserving nature and biodiversity. With its rich and diverse biological resources, Viet Nam has pioneered implementing the goals set in the Kunming - Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), as evidenced by the adoption of the National Strategy on Biodiversity for 2030, vision to 2050.

The participation of Viet Nam in COP16 affirmed that its willingness to work with the international community to solve the challenges of biological diversity. While the environmental threat is becoming more severe, global collaboration is necessary to maintain a sustainable future for Viet Nam and the world.

The conference will last 2 weeks, from October 21st to November 1st. This is a vital milestone in implementing the ambitious goals set in the KMGBF for 2030.

Within the conference framework, countries will discuss the finance and resource mobilization to protect the global ecosystem; Digital Sequence Information on genetic resources (DSI); the role of local communities in conserving biodiversity and tackling climate change, the link between health and biodiversity, as well as the risks from invasive alien species and genetically modified organisms.

These topics will be discussed throughout the conference to build on the success of COP 15 and address current challenges.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision No. 1352/QD-TTg on November 8, 2024, approving the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. One of the plan's key objectives is to increase the total area of Viet Nam’s nature reserve system to 6.6 million hectares.
