On December 16, in Hoi An City (Quang Nam), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) organized a workshop to review the achievements of the Strategic Partnership Program between IUCN and the Packaging Recycling Organization (PRO) Viet Nam.
From 2020 to 2024, the program has delivered significant outcomes, enhancing the efficiency of domestic solid waste management and addressing plastic waste pollution in Viet Nam, particularly in Hoi An City. Four pilot projects were successfully implemented in Hoi An, including Waste Separation at Source, Volumetric and Weight-Based Waste Fee Collection (VBWF), Corporate Action on Plastic Waste, and Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs).
The VBWF pilot program gained notable recognition in December 2024, earning second prize in the "Green Solutions for Circular Economy and Sustainable Development" competition hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's Center for Communication on Natural Resources and Environment in Da Nang. The program has played a vital role in promoting the Extended Producer and Importer Responsibility (EPR) provisions under the Law on Environmental Protection 2020. This effort was made possible through close collaboration with the Department of Legal Affairs under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
In Hoi An, the project distributed 100 three-compartment bins crafted from 2,500 kilograms of low-value recycled plastic and 54 Green Houses built from recycled materials to the city and the Hoi An City Women's Union. Public awareness campaigns were also launched to promote waste separation at the source and foster community engagement in sustainable waste management practices.
