Minister Do Duc Duy receives and works with the Australian Ambassador to Viet Nam

On October 4, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Do Duc Duy held a reception and working session with Mr. Andrew Goledzinowski, Australian Ambassador to Viet Nam, to discuss future cooperation programs in natural resources and environment.

At the meeting, Minister Do Duc Duy thanked the Australian Government for its valuable support to Viet Nam in disaster response, especially the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in the northern provinces and cities. The timely support of the Australian Government, with an emergency aid package worth 3 million AUD, has helped Viet Nam have more resources to respond to and overcome the consequences of natural disasters.

Minister Do Duc Duy said that this support clearly demonstrates the strong spirit of cooperation and solidarity between the two countries.

Based on issues of mutual concern, Minister Do Duc Duy and Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski discussed climate change, including the content of the Joint Statement of the Prime Ministers of Viet Nam and Australia on practical action to respond to climate change at COP26. Minister Do Duc Duy and Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski said that the joint statement will also contribute to the global goal of net zero emissions and the implementation of international commitments such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Minister Do Duc Duy thanked the Australian Government for its valuable support to Viet Nam in responding to natural disasters, especially the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in the northern provinces and cities.

Minister Do Duc Duy and Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski exchanged views on the development of the carbon market, in which Viet Nam wishes Australia to support greenhouse gas inventory in various fields, establish technical standards, build and manage a carbon credit project registration system, organize and operate the carbon market, etc.

The two officials also discussed preparations for the upcoming COP29 climate conference. Viet Nam plans to showcase its progress in climate change mitigation and adaptation to the international community and collaborate with partners who share common goals in achieving global climate targets.

Regarding cooperation in the field of geology and minerals, Australia previously supported Viet Nam in developing the first Law on Minerals in 1996. Currently, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is in the process of amending this Law to more sustainably manage natural resources and minerals. Through Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski, Minister Do Duc Duy hoped that in the coming time, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will continue to receive the attention of the Ambassador and the Australian Embassy in Viet Nam in this process through sharing experiences, supporting experts and technology in the exploration and exploitation of minerals in a sustainable manner.

Also at the meeting, Minister Do Duc Duy and Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski discussed cooperation in the field of seas and islands, including contents on marine data management and use, blue economic development, marine conservation, reducing ocean pollution, sharing experiences on offshore wind power between Viet Nam and Australia, etc.

In addition, with the impact of climate change today, Viet Nam has been and is being greatly affected, so Minister Do Duc Duy proposed that the Australian Government will support Viet Nam in warning and forecasting natural disasters, rain, storms, floods, landslides, etc., so that Viet Nam can proactively and minimize at least the extreme natural disasters caused by climate change.

Talking with Minister Do Duc Duy, Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski said that on the basis of the cooperative relationship between the two Governments, Australia has a lot of experience, techniques, policies as well as financial resources for sustainable development programs and projects, so it is ready to support Viet Nam in these areas, and suggested that there should be more policies to support the private business sector to participate in green development programs, adapting to climate change,…

Acknowledging the sharing from Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski, Minister Do Duc Duy said that with Australia's experience and qualifications, it will greatly support Viet Nam in programs on climate change, energy transition, and sustainable exploitation of strategic minerals. Minister Do Duc Duy also suggested that there should be government-level cooperation programs to facilitate the implementation of strategic projects of the two sides. Minister Do Duc Duy wished that Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski would play an important role in bridging the cooperation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in particular and Viet Nam with Australia in general to achieve many successful results in the future.
