Pioneering in implementing the Vietnamese Government's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 (Net Zero 2050), recently, Viet Nam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk) was confirmed as the first dairy company in Viet Nam to have a factory and farm with carbon neutrality according to PAS 2060 standards. Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Company was awarded a certificate of inspection and confirmation of greenhouse gases.
* Viet Nam Dairy Company - Vinamilk has just officially announced the roadmap to Net Zero 2050 with the action program "Vinamilk Pathway to Dairy Net Zero 2050". This business's action program focuses on 4 key areas: Sustainable agriculture - Green production - Environmentally friendly logistics - Sustainable consumption. Vinamilk aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2027, cut and neutralize 55% by 2035, and reach net zero emissions - Net Zero by 2050.
A memorable milestone in Vinamilk's pioneering journey after completing the greenhouse gas inventory at its units in 2022, Vinamilk Nghe An Dairy Factory and Vinamilk Nghe An Dairy Farm have become the first units to achieve carbon neutrality according to PAS2060:2014 standards. Accordingly, Vinamilk was also confirmed to be the first dairy company in Viet Nam to have both a factory and farm that are carbon neutral according to this standard.
According to the published and confirmed report, these two units' total greenhouse gas emissions have been neutralized to 17,560 tons of CO2 (equivalent to about 1.7 million trees). This results from Vinamilk's "dual action" efforts to cut production and livestock farming emissions while maintaining the company's green tree fund to absorb greenhouse gases over the years.
Currently, 13 farms and 10 factories of Vinamilk have been wholly installed with solar energy while promoting green energy such as Biomass (at the factory) and biogas (at the farm). Vinamilk also invested heavily in building a dairy farm model like Green Farm oriented towards sustainable agriculture. Factories have been strongly transformed, and high technology and a circular economy have been applied very early to reduce emissions.
Ms. Nguyen Dinh Minh Tam, a representative of the BSI organization - the certification unit for Nghe An dairy factories, highly appreciated Vinamilk's methodical orientation as one of the few units that have started implementing inspection. Accurately and thoroughly list greenhouse gases early on, thereby building emission reduction roadmaps. A representative of Bureau Veritas (UK), the certification unit for Vinamilk's farms in Nghe An, said that cutting emissions and greenhouse gases and moving towards Net Zero in the dairy industry is challenging, especially with large-scale dairy farms. This goal requires investment in technology solutions, green energy conversion, circular economy application... in a comprehensive way.
Since 2012, Vinamilk has deployed the 1 million trees fund for Viet Nam, completing the planting of 1,121,000 trees by the end of 2020. In 2023, continue to coordinate with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to implement tree planting activities to neutralize carbon towards Net Zezo within 5 years 2023 - 2027 and many other tree planting projects to form Vinamilk forests in the green tree fund to help absorb carbon emissions. Vinamilk is also the first Vietnamese dairy enterprise to participate in the dairy industry's global initiative on Net Zero - Pathways to Dairy Net Zero, founded by the International Dairy Federation (IDF), Sustainable Development Framework Dairy industry (DSF), Global Dairy Platform…
Ms. Mai Kieu Lien, CEO of Vinamilk, shared that Vinamilk realized this was the right direction and made decisions very early. Vinamilk hopes to contribute to strongly conveying positive messages to the business community and joining hands with the government on the net zero mission journey.
* According to the business roadmap, Nestlé Viet Nam also set the goal of reducing emissions by 20% by 2025, 50% by 2030, and completing the Net Zero goal by 2050.
Accordingly, Nestlé has focused on the upstream value chain, with two strategic approaches to reduce emissions: Promoting regenerative agriculture; and conserving and regenerating forests. In addition, the company continues to implement initiatives and programs to reduce emissions in production and freight transportation.
Nestlé's regenerative agriculture model focuses on conserving biodiversity, improving soil quality, conserving water resources, combining diverse and integrated intercropping methods with livestock, and creating a sustainable landscape. In the coffee growing sector, this model is being implemented by Nestlé through the Nescafé Plan program, aiming to reduce greenhouse emissions, increase farmers' income, and contribute to the community. In Viet Nam, regenerative agriculture methods are shared with coffee farmers within the framework of the Nescafé Plan, which has been implemented in the Central Highlands provinces since 2011.
Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Company has also just been awarded a Certificate of greenhouse gas inspection and confirmation according to ISO 14064-1:2018 and ISO 14067:2018 standards by the UK's leading international certification organization for product lines/codes being manufactured.
A representative of this company said that as the largest steel manufacturer in Southeast Asia, from the beginning, Hoa Phat Group has applied modern, closed circular production technology from G7 countries in all iron and steel production complexes. Hoa Phat has carefully calculated and spent up to 30% of its investment capital on environmental items.
Hoa Phat's iron and steel production complexes all apply a series of the latest technology solutions and applications to optimize production as well as save energy. In 2023, the total electricity generation of Hoa Phat Dung Quat Thermal Power and Steel Plant was recorded to reach 1.96 billion kWh, helping the Company to be 90% self-sufficient in electricity production.
In addition to using excess heat from coke smelting to generate electricity, the Complex also utilizes excess coal gas from iron and steel smelting as fuel for boilers to generate electricity. This power production technology has contributed to environmental protection, reducing CO2 emissions compared to coal-fired power generation with equivalent capacity.
Collecting data, preparing reports, and quantifying greenhouse gas emissions are important for Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel. The Company will continue to develop a management plan to monitor and report greenhouse gas inventories periodically and regularly while maximizing the digitalization of data collection and tracking tools to serve the process. Retrieve and provide information quickly and accurately. This is the Company's initial success in expanding export markets for Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel's product lines/codes.
