The Viet Nam component of the project titled "Reducing Pollution and Maintaining Environmental Flows in the East Asian Seas Through Integrated River Basin Management in ASEAN Countries" will be implemented in the Vu Gia-Thu Bồn river basin and the coastal waters of Quang Nam province and Da Nang city.

The total budget for Viet Nam 's component is USD 737,400, funded as non-refundable Official Development Assistance (ODA) by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project will be executed from 2024 to 2027.

The project's primary goal is to establish sustainable and effective management mechanisms for the Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin and the coastal waters of Quang Nam and Da Nang. This will be achieved through interdisciplinary solutions such as improving water quality, reducing pollution, managing solid waste, and maintaining environmental flows.

The project activities include: Developing and implementing an Integrated Information Management System (IIMS) for the management of the Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin and the coastal areas of Quang Nam and Da Nang; Assessing the carrying capacity of the Vu Gia-Thu Bon River system and the related coastal waters in Quang Nam and Da Nang; Formulating and executing communication plans to raise awareness among communities, management personnel, and monitoring staff; Conducting analysis and assessments of water quality in the river and coastal waters; Creating an integrated action plan for river basin management.

Previously, in 2022, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Stockholm International Water Institute organized a national workshop on "Source-to-Sea Management: Applying the Source-to-Sea Approach to Key Challenges in the Vu Gia-Thu Bon River Basin in Viet Nam ." This initiative was part of the project "Piloting the Source-to-Sea Approach for Plastic Waste Management in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province," funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

This approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to oceans, water, biodiversity, and climate.
